Florence Katsitsienhawi Benedict is a master in the art of sweetgrass and black ash splint basketry. She is part of a long line of gifted Akwesasne Mohawk basketmakers that includes her grandmother Kaiatehente; her mother, Kahentineshen; and her aunt, Kiohontasen. A dedicated teacher, she has also passed on the tradition to her children and grandchildren.
Florence is known for her beautiful baskets and uses an abundance of sweetgrass in her work, giving her baskets an aromatic quality. Her work has been shown nationally in touring exhibits and in 1988, Florence Benedict was counted among the Basketmakers of Akwesasne who were awarded a New York State Governor's Art's Award.
