The Art of “Upcycling”

This collection showcases some of the work of those TAUNY Folkstore artisans who honor the tradition of repurposing materials at hand - textiles, wood, and metal to produce their works of art.  James Gonzalez uses old metal barn roofing and siding to create his “magical realism” art.  Susan Robinson paints realistic native birds, animals flowers and vegetation on river driftwood.  Tina  Charbonneau creates bags and totes from repurposed clothing and fabric, and makes warm mittens from old sweaters.  Martha Aschmann, David  Buchholz and Gary Bezio use old woods for their woodwork.  Connie Denney weaver rugs from repurposed clothing and upholstery fabrics, and Helen Condon and Debbie Orland cut, roll and braid repurposed fabrics to create rugs and baskets.  Sudjai Bentley weaves birchbark into geese and hangs them from twigs as mobiles. Jennifer Kuracina makes earrings out of river birch.  Sean Lennox produces wall art from repurposed woods, often using Sho Sugi Ban technique. Romi Sebald creates plush “woodland critters” from reused fabrics and buttons.
