Artisan Baskets

Basket making in Northern New York dates back to the earliest presence of humans: Mohawks and Abenakis made utilitarian containers of bark and splint and in the 19th century began to make fancy, decorative baskets for tourists.  Settlers of European ancestry brought their own baskets and basket-making styles to the area.  Today, the region's basket makers include artisans who stick to traditional styles and local materials, as well as those who experiment with technique and imported materials.
