Collection: Pottery
Most of the early pottery produced in Northern NY came from local factories that produced sturdy, simply designed, utilitarian pieces for a mass market. Collectors cherish surviving examples of this pottery, and one can find them in museums throughout the region.
Native Americans also produced pottery, firing it in pits dug into the ground.
From the 1960's and on, individuals seeking a simple, creative life started pottery studios throughout the region. The number of people making pottery in Northern NY is greater today than it has ever been. The regional style is still to make sturdy pieces for everyday use.
