Pit firing is one of the oldest firing techniques in the world.  Usually bisque fired pots are placed in a pit(or a campfire), and surrounded by combustibles and different organic materials.  Sometimes minerals such as copper, iron compounds, salt and other products are placed near the pots as well.  The process uses fire, smoke and ash to create changing conditions that affect the pots differently. The placement of each piece, the materials used, and the behavior of the fire, smoke and ash all contribute to the final appearance.

As with Raku, Horsehair & Feather pottery, pit-fired pits cannot hold water or be used for food.
